  • "What is Java Software?" You'd think they know by now...

While looking to download the Java5 JDK from Sun, I ran across this on the home page of java.com: What is Java Software? Java software allows you to run applications called "applets" that are written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. Corporations also use applets for intranet applications and e-business solutions. Applets!? After almost a decade of Java's success on the server through J2EE and lightweight containers, the marketing idiots at Sun choose to explain what Java is by citing applets ?!? Folks, if ever there was a single-sentence hint as to how Sun doesn't quite "get it", this is it.> Enterprise consulting, mentoring or instruction. • Blog changes

Because of all the referrer and Trackback/Pingback spam, I've had to disable Trackback and Pingback (hopefully just temporarily, at least until I can get my dasBlog upgraded). Dunno if that makes anybody else sad, but I'm bummed at not being able to see peoples' comments and reactions to my posts. Thus, for the time being, if you respond (positively or negatively) to something I say, and would really like a reaction (again, positive or negative), please either drop me an email or just post a comment here. • VS Live San Francisco and Microsoft Vista

I am the track chair for Vista Live!, one of the sub-conferences of VS Live! San Francisco . This conference will be held March 25-29, 2007. As track chair, it is my job to recruit speakers and help select sessions around software development and Windows Vista and .NET 3.0. Windows Vista has some major impacts on software development. Perhaps most notably, having users (and developers) run in a non-Admin account affects how both development tools and end-user applications install and run. And then there are the new shell features, and integrated RSS support. Add to this .NET 3.0, with WCF, WPF, WF and WCS, and there's a lot of ground to cover. If you would like to speak at VS Live in March, on a Windows Vista related topic, please use this online proposal submission form to submit your idea. For more information go to www.lhotka.net . • My article on the Web Services Software Factory (Service Factory)

One of the articles I mentioned here just shipped in the December issue of MSDN Magazine (see the Service Station column) and it's now online for public consumption. Enjoy. I wrote a sequel to this piece that specifically covers the WCF guidance package in more detail -- it should hit the site in the next month or two. Read More...
