Sipping the first cup of coffee, ah yes, there's a possibility I'll be awake soon... Windows Vista The big news is a major new release of Vista, Build 5472 is available now on Connect and I believe its good enough to make a public release on MSDN Extreme Programming/Agile I'm thrilled to see my good friend and Agile Guru Jim Shore's announcement about his first fully-accredited XP course !! Jim is a consultant on my team and he can make your organization go wicked fast and produce great software too. Notice, "XP course", not Agile. Interview with Andy Hunt (of Pragmatic Programmers) on thier new book, Practices of an Agile Developer TDD Worst Practice: Test Driven Debugging ; I hate when people do this and say they are doing TDD. I've said it once, I'll say it again; if you are spending time in the debugger for logic and business verification, you are wasting your companies money and time. Write a test. The debugger is only for very weird, intractable exceptional situations where there is no other recourse. If you see every testing situation this way, well you need to learn about TDD-) ...more coming CLR Greg Young continues his exceptional blogging at a level that excites me with Performance: String Reverse . I'm both thrilled and scared. Obviously they are buying the talents of Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell, both of which know Windows Internals better than, well, most of the Windows team-). I'm scared for what will happen to the best free tools on the planet and frankly tools that must be installed with every new or repaved system. I'd advise you to go download them now while you still can. As both Scott and I have said, Mike Gunderloy is the supreme master of these kind Read More...

Welcome new readers! There are a number of great posts that caught my attention today. In addition, I have started my 3rd CAB article to be posted here as well as getting my Syracuse WCF slides up on the site. Agile/Extreme Programming/TDD Now, Scott Ambler has taken the ugly heavyweight monstrosity, Rational Unified Process (RUP) and tried to morph it into the Agile Unified Process (AUP) . I have a lot of respect for Scott and his huge contributions to many areas of Agile but I am frankly sick and tired of making Extreme Programming politically correct for brain-dead software companies and watering it down further and further with these kind of things. The tendency these days is to further dulute "Agile" (I hate that term) methodologies to make them palatable. Enough. I notice that Steve Lasker is doing the first one on Smart Client: Offline Data Synchronization and Caching for Smart Clients. I looked at and used some of Steve's stuff by permission when I was presenting on Occassionally Connected Smart Clients and it is great stuff! All the other talks look great as well. Greg continues to rock with Method Calls: Part 1 (Normal Calls) Avalon/WPF/Smart Clients The man, Charles Petzold has shipped his Avalon book to the printers. This is one that I am highly anticpating! Peter was interviewed by Dr. Dobb's Journal on CAB , the Smart Client Software Factory and Agile Software Development . • Welcome All New Readers!

I noticed that my Feedburner feed picked up a couple of hundred subscribers all of a sudden and wasn't sure why. I know I was good in Syracuse but there weren't that many people-)). I was floored and honored to learn that Scott Hanselman , in his 2 5th Hanselminutes , had listed me in his 20 or so Favorite Blogs and had highly recomended my blog for my New and Notable posts as well as saying nice things. Scott is, of course, a giant in our community and I highly recomend you read his blog as well as subscribe to his show. For new readers, I started this blog in March 2002, when there were only Peter Drayton , Simon Fell , and myself as Microsoft blogs. I was an " Interop Beast " as Scott and Carl talk about but lately, I post a lot about my daily experiences in being an Architect & Lead on an Agile team that has been actually using Indigo/WCF for almost a year now. WCF/SOA Two geat posts by the Hosting man in Indigo, Steve Maines, on the ServiceHostFactory API, and ServiceHostFactory vs. ServiceHostFactoryBase . The ServiceHost is crucial for WCF developers to understand, as it gives WCF a lot of power. It abstracts away the notion of a Host so it'sa fairly simple manner to switch hosts with a config file setting pretty much and you can host from any AppDomain that has a CLR - WAS, IIS, Console EXE, Windows App, Windows Service, etc Share this post: Email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! I am very pleased that two of my good friends, James Avery and Jim Hol mes are working on a most excellent book, Windows Developer Power Tools. • PDF Slides for SOA with WCF Iselin NJ Talk Tonight

Thanks to the 35 or so people that came out in Iselin NJ tonight to hear the newly updated SOA with WCF talk! I feel that all my talks this year on this have been excellent but tonight was ultra special. After a complete laptop meltdown and hard disk crash, last minute scrambling to use the Steve Eichert's laptop (with a different version of Indigo) and then the Toshiba disk coming back to life just in time, the whole night rocked! I really felt in the zone and the audience here asked the best and most detailed questions of the tour. There were a lot of great questions about Indigo, Agile, PAG, CAB and more! It was also extra special to see two of my best friends, DonXML and Scott W drive some distance to come to see me! The PDF deck is up on my Presentations page of my portal. Thanks to the noted Indigo people for use of some slides. The code I have is for the June CTP and there were some changes (they didn't work with Beta 2). I'll have that dealt with this week. Enjoy!! P.S. As soon as I got home, the Toshiba disk died again, the computer sounds like a 747 on the runaway - I think the fan and the disk are shot. First of all, Happy Independence Day to all in the US! I have a lot to list here but I will likely get interrupted any minute to go to the Shore and do holiday type stuff. Before, I start, I wanted to ask the readers a question. I am trying to get together some posts I want to do in the longer category but wanted to get a feel what people might favor. The choices are: Taking my SOA and WCF Deep Dive and turning it into a series of articles Continuing my CAB/SCBAT deep dive series More on getting started with TDD, XP, etc. Other? On to my backlog of stuff… Indigo/WCF/SOA Nicholas Allan – Some Changes for Channels and Transports in the June CTP, Parts 1 , Part 2 , Part 3 , Part 4 , Part 5 . Seems like a lot of changes to be termed “some changes.” -) Again Nicholas – It’s All in the Binding Context . That is for sure. I already said that Craig McMurthy’s Indigo book is by far the best so far and he has a series of updates for June CTP/RC1 – Chapter 2 , Chapter 3 , Chapter 4 , Chapter 8 , Chapter 9 , Chapter 13 Technorati Tags: SOA , WCF , Windows Communication Foundation Share this post: Email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! • July Web Service Factory and Smart Client BAT is Out!

Both the July drop of the Web Service Factory or Service BAT is out and the June SCBAT are out. I am super excited about this as it is nearing V1 and we are using both of these in production code. I have been blogging about the Service Bat since the begining . I talked about my SCBAT experiences here and that the SCBAT has helped us reduce our UI and CAB costs 5 to 1. Remember to install the the new June 2006 release of the Guidance Automation Extensions and Toolkit , first! A couple of real cool things on the Services BAT according to Tom : The installation process has been streamlined And the biggest news is that the Service Factory now has a brand new guidance package dedicated to helping you build data access layers using ADO.NET 2.0. The goal of this guidance was not to be an object-relational mapping framework or an entirely new approach to data access. Instead it's designed to take out some of the repetitive and error-prone work of creating a data access layer by hand, by helping to create some (but not all) of the key classes used in a data access layer. Most of you are probably already aware that the choice of available technologies for building data access layers will be changing significantly in the future with the advent of LINQ to ADO.NET . We're already working with these teams to start planning for these technologies, and we'll be publishing samples that show how the Service Factory guidance will look in a LINQ to ADO.NET world. I said this in all three of my recent INETA talks: PAG is the best group in Microsoft right now. • Sam Gentile - Ohio Tour 2006

I go to Ohio tommorrow morning for a mini-tour for INETA Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday, I will be in Toldeo for the Northwest Ohio .NET User's Group and then Wednesday I will be driving to Dayton for the Dayton .NET User's Group. Come on out and learn about Service-Orientation and a deep dive into Indigo. I will be going out both nights after to answer questions and meet people. Hope to see you! Looks like we are going here after the Toledo meeting tomorrow night (new downtown location). Notes: Night one of the tour was a big success and I rocked. I got to hang out with Jason Follas for hours before who is a great guy. About 25 people showed up. By all accounts it went well. We went out to Tony Packo's after which just was one of the best meals I have ever had in my life! A big thanks to Jason and Greg Huber for a great day. Onto to Dayton in the morning!
