  • North West Winter Driving Conditions

This video shows the scary winter road contitions we've been suffering with in the Pacific North West for the last week. Although this video is from Portland, but we've had similar conditions in Seattle / Redmond. Last week it took about 1 hour for many folks to get out of many of the MIcrosoft parking garage due to a huge dump of snow on the exit ramps. Driving home was difficult with 2-4 inches of snow falling in under an hour and needing to squeeze past a slew of abandoned cars on several hills! So, if you are planning to move to the Pacific North West remember three "necessaties" you should pay serious consideraton to - 4-wheel drive on your car(s), a generator for your home, and air-conditioning for the summer.... • The Great Pre-Christmas Storm of 2006

Seattle was hit by an extremely severe storm that was the worst for over a decade. Trees and telegraph polls were liturally torn up by the roots or snapped in half like matchsticks by the force of the huricane strength winds (75mph, and gusting to about 135mph in places!) This video provides an overview of the situation that hit the Seattle area: http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?f=00&g=b7cc327d-3ca2-49a2-9ed7-64b43ca9e86c&p=Source_Nightly%20News&t=c24&rf=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16215340/&fg= Here are some pictures of the scene of devastation in the Union Hill area of Redmond where we live, which was one of the most severely affected areas. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16225574/displaymode/1107/s/2/framenumber/12/ http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/16225574/displaymode/1107/s/2/framenumber/7/ At the peak of the storm, over 1.1 million homes (not to mention numerous businesses in the areas too) lost power around the Seattle area, and the utility companies have worked flat out to repair the infrastructure and get everyone back online. The Microsoft campus was completely closed without power or network connectivity for 3 days too. Our house was without power for 7 days, and our internet / cable / phone connectivity was out for 10 days. Luckily we have a generator which kept the lights on and the heating working for at least part of the day. Although our family already had some fairly good disaster preperations in place in line with the 3-days,3-ways preparedness program, the problem very quickly became ensuring we had enough gasoline stockpiled to last us through more than a temporary outage. Gas stations can't pump gas when they have no electricity! Our preparedness was severely strained though when it became obvious that the situation would last many more days that expected, and most of the roads off the hill where we live were either blocked with fallen trees or downed power lines. Thankfully everyone was safe and there was no damage to our house, although two of my co-workers had trees crash into their homes and will still be working thorough the insurance claim and repair work for some time. We'll definitely not forget this Christmas holiday season in a hurry!... Read More...
  • The Birth Of A New Music Venue For Seattle

Yesterday saw the birth of a new music venue in Seattle. Linda and I went to the opening night at the WaMu Theater for a concert by Seal - a pop/rock star who was big in the UK in the early 1990's with music described as an interesting fusion of pop, soul, folk, dance and rock. As the first night reviews say, the venue is a little strange at first (it's basically a concert hall made out of curtains!), but you soon forget all about that when the main concert starts and you hear the great sound quality that the venue can deliver.... • Welcome to the USA

Last weekend, we received a very nice letter from the US Citizenship and Immigration Service containing the following: WELCOME TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA This is to notify you that your application for permanent residence has been approved. It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to permanent residence status in the United States. Much to our surprise, our "green cards" (which are not actually green!) arrived in the mail this week. So we can now add the title "Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) of the United States of America" to our many other credentials. :-)... Read More...
